When it comes to sights, it is not easy to beat Eger, but Egerszalók has managed to put itself on the map. The small village with approximately 2,000 inhabitants lie in an unrivalled natural environment, yet its true spectacle is the snow-white Sódomb (Salt Hill) which sparkles from afar.
The name is somewhat misleading: although the blinding crystals really resemble salt, it is actually the result of deposited limestone originating from 70 degrees Celsius hot thermal water which spouted from a depth of 410 meters. It’s no exaggeration to say that the formation is truly unique: in Europe it is the only one; however, it is also a real curiosity in the whole world. You can only find similar formation in the Yellowstone National Park in the U.S. and in the Asian part of Turkey.
The white stone laces remind many of the rocky hills of the Mediterranean coasts bleached by the sea, and, of course, the good wines of the area strengthen the Mediterranean feeling as well. Since the nearby thermal bath has been built, it is also easier to approach the Salt Hill, as there is a paved way leading to the sight. Once you are around, you should not miss the bath either. The complex is one of the finest, most modern and luxurious hotels in the area, and its sulfuric water is proven to have healing effect on inflammation, postoperative regeneration as well as psoriasis and eczema.
