3 places with Mediterranean atmosphere you wouldn’t believe are in Hungary

Do you miss vacation time? It would be nice to feel like you are in Italy again, but you cannot afford to fly there? We have good news: you can also find places which immediately remind you of a Tuscan field or a rocky beach within the country borders.

Snow-white rocks in Egerszalók

When it comes to sights, it is not easy to beat Eger, but Egerszalók has managed to put itself on the map. The small village with approximately 2,000 inhabitants lie in an unrivalled natural environment, yet its true spectacle is the snow-white Sódomb (Salt Hill) which sparkles from afar.

The name is somewhat misleading:  although the blinding crystals really resemble salt, it is actually the result of deposited limestone originating from 70 degrees Celsius hot thermal water which spouted from a depth of 410 meters. It’s no exaggeration to say that the formation is truly unique: in Europe it is the only one; however, it is also a real curiosity in the whole world. You can only find similar formation in the Yellowstone National Park in the U.S. and in the Asian part of Turkey.

The white stone laces remind many of the rocky hills of the Mediterranean coasts bleached by the sea, and, of course, the good wines of the area strengthen the Mediterranean feeling as well. Since the nearby thermal bath has been built, it is also easier to approach the Salt Hill, as there is a paved way leading to the sight. Once you are around, you should not miss the bath either. The complex is one of the finest, most modern and luxurious hotels in the area, and its sulfuric water is proven to have healing effect on inflammation, postoperative regeneration as well as psoriasis and eczema.

Rape fields of Bakony

With its romantic story, the legend of Jóska Sobri and its wild gorges, Bakony is one of the most beautiful sights in Hungary that a hiker can hope for. However, those who come in the summer to the foot of the Bakony will find kilometres long rape fields and can enjoy a special experience: the small, yellow flowers of the rape growing from April to September provide a view fit for a postcard. As far as the eyes can see, swinging, small golden petals cover the landscape. If you are exhausted by the hike – or the weather is simply not good for a hike – warm up your body in a nearby thermal bath! For example, Pápa is just a stone's throw away, and the thermal bath of the Várkertfürdő is open all year round.  There are water pathways to the thermal garden, giant slides, children’s pools and comfortable deck-chairs awaiting you, while the pleasant thermal water also helps relieve rheumatological complaints.

Tihany lavender fields

From mid-June the Balaton Uplands blossom, the Tihany area is transformed into a fragrant, pale lilac field, and there is probably no other point in the country where you could better feel the true atmosphere of Provance. The sight of the intimate small towns, wine cellars and, of course, the nearby mountains, does not only offer a Mediterranean atmosphere in the summer, but it indulges those who may want to travel less all year round. Lake Balaton offers itself as a program option, but if the water is too cold or you simply love pools, it is worth visiting the other side of the lake: in the South there are several thermal baths where you can relax in hot water pools. The thermal baths of Marcali and Igal are very popular, and the Csiszta Bath, not far from Fonyód, have been renovated recently. No matter which one you choose, they can be the perfect ending to your Mediterranean weekend.
