Back pain is only the beginning – here’s how you ruin your body by working at an office

We tend to believe that office work is clean, comfortable and that anyone with such a job is a very lucky person. It might be true that working in an office is not as dangerous as feeding sharks, but unfortunately these types of jobs also have their disadvantages that affect millions of people working in offices. One of them might be you, unless you do something about it!

Back pain, musculoskeletal disorders

This is the first step that many people experience before their 30s when they work in an office environment. The sore muscles caused by inactive lifestyle, the rigid neck and shoulder that have adjusted to staring at a monitor all day give you an even worse posture, this leads to more pain, and you quickly find yourself in the midst of a vicious circle. Unfortunately, there is no magical solution for people working in an office environment and encountering these complaints, you have to spend extra time on maintaining your muscles. The most effective form of sport for this problem is yoga, which has specific types that have been developed for office workers, or Pilates, and last but not least, a good massage can help a lot too.

Stress and the things that come with it

Deadlines, e-mails, multitasking - an office environment can put pressure on employees, while surveys show that the lack of personal contact makes this situation even worse. Studies have shown that conversations by e-mail, phone and any other non-face-to-face method have much worse impact on us than when we meet someone in real life.

Permanent stress not only destroys your mood, it can lead to blood pressure problems, insomnia and even heart problems.

Regular exercise has proven to reduce stress and its unhealthy effects, and group workouts also give a community experience that release endorphin and oxytocin - these hormones help to make you feel better in your skin and to handle tense situations more easily .

Bored out of your mind

It's not just a cliché that if you're really suffering from boredom at your job, you're more likely to develop heart disease or stroke – it’s been proven by a study done at University College London. In addition, monotony may have a bad impact on your motivation and creativity, so boring office work has both shorter and longer term undesired effects. If you really do not feel enthusiastic about your job, it may be time to change your career, but it could also help to spend your days off with great experiences. For this, you do not need much planning - for example, you could choose a nearby spa and on a weekend you could enjoy the amazing programs that Hungarian spas offer with your family, friends, significant other or even just by yourself.

If the air is bad in the office

And no, we don’t mean the times when your colleagues sitting on your sides are mad at each other and you're forced to sit all day long in the midst of their negative energies, though this is also not the greatest thing that can happen to your health. However, here we mean bad air in the most literal sense of the word: poorly ventilated offices, air conditioners and ventilators that are barely or not at all cleaned may cause irritation, allergies, and low-quality air can cause illnesses in your lungs and your respiratory system over time. Regular ventilation, if possible, can help, as well as the simple act of going outside in a park during your lunch break for a few minutes. From time to time, it's a good idea to visit a salt room, that not only helps you to stay healthy during the cold winter periods, it also contributes to clean your respiratory system and thus your body's oxygen supply throughout the whole year.
